Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill
Proposed amendments
Dr Elizabeth Kerekere, in Committee, to move the following amendments:
Clause 4
In clause 4, after the definition of conversion practice (page 2, after line 19), insert:
gender expression—
(a)
means a person’s presentation of gender through—
(i)
physical appearance (including dress, hairstyles, accessories, and cosmetics); and
(ii)
mannerisms, speech, behavioural patterns, names, and personal references; and
(b)
may or may not conform to a person’s gender identity
gender identity—
(a)
means a person’s gender-related identity, which may or may not correspond with their designated sex at birth; and
(b)
includes—
(i)
the personal sense of the body (whether this involves medical intervention or not); and
(ii)
other expressions of gender, including dress, speech, mannerisms, names, and personal references
In clause 4, after the definition of serious harm (page 2, after line 28), insert:
sexual orientation means a person’s emotional, affectional, and sexual attraction to, or intimate or sexual relations with, persons of—
(a)
a different gender; or
(b)
the same gender; or
(c)
more than one gender.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Bill to provide definitions of terms used in the Bill, consistent with those recommended by the Human Rights Commission in their submission on the Bill.
