Organic Products and Production Bill
Proposed amendment
Mark Cameron, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 10(2)
After clause 10(2)(c) (page 11, after line 31), insert:
(d)
a producer is producing and selling products only for the local market.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends clause 10 of the Bill with the effect that the requirement to be approved as an operator does not apply to a producer producing and selling food only for the local market.
This addition will practically exempt small-scale organics growers who are only selling directly in their local markets. While organics standards are important for export and large scale producers providing for retail supermarkets in New Zealand, applying potentially expensive regulatory standards requirements to small scale producers for farmers markets and neighbourhood markets is overreach and unnecessary.
