Spatial Planning Bill
Proposed amendment to SOP No 390
Simon Court, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 7
In clause 7, replace “, tikanga (including kaitiakitanga), and mātauranga” with “and tikanga (including kaitiakitanga)”.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper seeks to amend the Spatial Planning Bill. Mātauranga Māori is defined in other law as “Māori traditional knowledge.” It is difficult to assess what this will mean in practice, as it essentially is a concept that is based in oral tradition, from a select group of experts, and is difficult to contest for its reliability. Environmental law should be based, and claims questioned, on the basis of scientifically testable fact.
