Explanatory note
This Amendment Paper amends the Electoral Amendment Bill. This Amendment Paper reduces the voting age to 16 years old. Voting is a fundamental human right. Across the world, we are seeing switched on 16-year-olds who are desperately unhappy with the decisions political leaders are making about their futures. They should have the right to have a say on their future, as the decisions made now will impact young people the most. As outlined in the Justice Committee’s report on the 2023 General Election, young people who were enfranchised at ages 16 or 17 reported higher levels of turnout than those first enrolled at age 18 or older. This change would help make electoral law more modern and effective.
