Proposed amendment
Vanushi Walters, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
Clause 10
In clause 10(2), replace new section 80(1)(d) (page 13, lines 13 to 22) with:
(d)
a person who is detained in prison under a sentence of imprisonment (including following detention in a hospital or secure facility) in any case where the sentence of imprisonment is a sentence—
(i)
of imprisonment for life; or
(ii)
of preventative detention; or
(iii)
for a term of 3 years or more:
Explanatory note
This Amendment Paper amends the Electoral Amendment Bill to reverse the change to prevent prisoners serving terms of less than three years from voting, but preserves the Bill’s policy of allowing those detained in a hospital or secure facility to vote.
