Mental Health Bill
Proposed amendments
Kahurangi Carter, in Committee, to move the following amendments:
Clause 6
In clause 6(1)(a)(ii), replace “.”
with “; and”
(page 19, line 8).
After clause 6(1)(a)(ii) (page 19, after line 8), insert:
(iii)
with appropriate measures in place to support a person to move from compulsory care to become a voluntary mental health consumer:
Explanatory note
This Amendment Paper amends the Mental Health Bill to highlight that with adequate resourcing, New Zealand can fully transition to voluntary care. The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand emphasises that reducing compulsion must not reduce care, and there must be sufficient voluntary support available for early intervention to prevent escalation.
