Wildlife Order 1996

PURSUANT to section 8 of the Wildlife Act 1953, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, hereby makes the following order.

Order

1 Title and commencement

  • (1) This order may be cited as the Wildlife Order 1996.

    (2) This order shall come into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

2 Unprotected wildlife

  • (1) Schedule 4 to the Wildlife Act 1953 (as amended by regulation 2(2) of the Wildlife Order (No 2) 1981) is hereby amended by omitting the item relating to Horse (Equus).

    (2) Schedule 5 to the Wildlife Act 1953 is hereby amended by inserting in the item relating to mammals, in its appropriate alphabetical order, the following item:

    “Horse (Equus).”

    (3) The Wildlife Order (No 2) 19811 is hereby consequentially revoked.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

The effect of this order is to remove protection from the wild horses in the south Kaimanawa Ranges. All horses living in a wild state in New Zealand are now unprotected.
