This order is administered in the Department of Conservation.

PURSUANT to section 8 of the Wildlife Act 1996, His Excellency the Governor-General, acting by and with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, hereby makes the following order.

1 Title and commencement

  • (1) This order may be cited as the Wildlife Order (No 2) 1996.

    (2) This order shall come into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

2 Absolutely protected wildlife

  • (1) Schedule 5 to the Wildlife Act 1953 is hereby amended by omitting the following items (as inserted by the Wildlife Order 1981):

    “Skinks (family Scincidae)—

    “Common skink (Leiolopisma nigriplantare maccani)

    “Copper skink (Cyclodina aenea)

    “Geckos (family Gekkonidae)—

    “Common gecko (Hoplodactylus maculatus)

    “Forest gecko (Hoplodactylus granulatus).”

    (2) The Wildlife Order 1981 is hereby consequentially revoked.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

The effect of this order is to absolutely protect the species of lizard listed in clause 2 of the regulations.
