Explanatory note
This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.
This notice, which comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette, is made under regulation 9 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It gives notice of the reappointment of Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki nominated for further terms by Te Rūnanga o Awarua. As Te Rūnanga o Awarua represents the relevant tangata whenua, regulation 9(5) of the regulations required the Minister to reappoint the Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki.
Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki may, within their area/rohe moana, authorise any individual to take fisheries resources managed under the Fisheries Act 1996 for customary food-gathering purposes. It is an offence to take any of those resources for customary food-gathering purposes without such authorisation.
