Explanatory note
This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.
This notice, which comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette, is made under regulation 22 of the Fisheries (South Island Customary Fishing) Regulations 1999 (the regulations). It gives notice of the reappointment of a Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for the mātaitai reserve at Puna-wai-Tōriki (Hays Gap). Regulation 22(3) of the regulations required the Minister to reappoint the Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki once Te Rūnanga o Awarua, which represents the relevant tangata whenua, nominated the appointee for a further term.
Tangata Tiaki/Kaitiaki for a mātaitai reserve may, in relation to the reserve,—
ask the Minister to recommend the making of regulations to allow commercial fishing of certain species:
make bylaws restricting or prohibiting the taking of fisheries resources managed under the Fisheries Act 1996:
authorise the taking of fisheries resources for the purpose of sustaining the functions of a marae:
authorise the relocation of fisheries resources for the purpose of enhancing stocks.
