This order, which comes into force on 1 April 2016, is made under the Major Events Management Act 2007 (the Act). It amends the Act’s Schedule, which contains permanently protected emblems and words. Use of those emblems and words that is not authorised, or covered by an exception is, under sections 28 to 31 of the Act, an offence for which the maximum penalty is a fine not exceeding $150,000. The Act also contains (in section 34) related prohibitions and authorising provisions for registration of bodies under names, or of emblems, the use of which would be an offence under section 28.

The amendments—

  • replace Part 1 with updated emblems for the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games:

  • add “Comité International Olympique” to the names in clause 1 of Part 2:

  • replace and update Part 3.

New Part 3 contains updated words relating to, in particular, the Games that are the—

  • 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in the Federative Republic of Brazil:

  • 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in Argentina:

  • 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang in the Republic of Korea (South Korea):

  • 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, in the State of Queensland, in Australia:

  • 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in Japan.

Issued under the authority of the Legislation Act 2012.

Date of notification in Gazette: 25 February 2016.
