Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki) Notice 2019

Pursuant to regulation 9 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Minister of Fisheries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki) Notice 2019.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

This notice applies to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana in the New Zealand fisheries waters within the following lines:

(a)

from the starting point at 35°18.478′S and 173°56.875′E (south-west of Puketona and north of the Waiaruhe River); then

(b)

by a straight line in a generally south-westerly direction to 35°25.498′S and 173°50.851′E (south-west of Ngawha Springs); then

(c)

by a straight line in a generally south-easterly direction to 35°29.478′S and 173°55.052′E (south-west of Keikei); then

(d)

by a straight line in a generally north-easterly direction to 35°25.942′S and 174°02.400′E (south-east of Moerewa); then

(e)

by a straight line in a generally north-easterly direction to 35°23.689′S and 174°06.466′E (east of the Tirohanga Stream and south-west of Cookson Road); then

(f)

by a straight line in a generally north-north-westerly direction to 35°21.512′S and 174°05.464′E (on the northern bank of the Kawakawa River, east of the Hukahuka Pa and Paringaringa Pa sites near Taumarere); then

(g)

by a straight line back to the starting point.

4 Tangata whenua

The tangata whenua of the area/rohe moana are Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki.

5 Appointments

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 (the regulations). It comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

The notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki. The area/rohe moana is for an area of Northland inland from Kawakawa, defined by points near Waiparera, Ngapipito, Pokapu, Tarakihi, and Kawakawa/Tirohanga.

Notice is given of the appointment of 7 tāngata kaitiaki/tiaki for the area/rohe moana. The Minister of Fisheries made the appointments at the request of Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki.

The powers of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki are set out in the regulations.
