Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rāngo, Ngāti Whātua Tūturu, and Te Tao Ū) Notice 2019

Pursuant to regulation 9 of the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998, the Minister of Fisheries gives the following notice.

Notice

1 Title

This notice is the Fisheries (Notification of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for Area/Rohe Moana of Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rāngo, Ngāti Whātua Tūturu, and Te Tao Ū) Notice 2019.

2 Commencement

This notice comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

3 Customary food gathering area/rohe moana

This notice applies to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana in the New Zealand fisheries waters enclosed by a line—

(a)

starting near Orongo Point inside the Kaipara Harbour at 36°24.509′S and 174°21.220′E; then

(b)

proceeding in a southerly direction along the mean high-water mark to a point near Te Waharoa Point (at 36°51.659′S and 174°25.992′E); then

(c)

proceeding west to a point at 36°51.659′S and 170°40.970′E; then

(d)

proceeding in a north-easterly direction to a point at 36°25.900′S and 171°38.256′E; then

(e)

proceeding east to a point at the entrance of the Kaipara Harbour (at 36°25.900′S and 171°38.256′E); then

(f)

proceeding in a north-easterly direction to a point at 36°23.900′S and 174°12.800′E; then

(g)

proceeding in an easterly direction back to the starting point.

4 Tangata whenua

The tangata whenua of the area/rohe moana are Ngāti Hine/Ngāti Rāngo (Puatahi Marae), Ngāti Whātua Tūturu/Te Tao Ū (Haranui Marae), Ngāti Rāngo (Kakanui Marae), Te Tao Ū (Reweti Marae), and Ngāti Rāngo (Araparera Marae).

5 Appointments

The Minister of Fisheries has appointed the following people as Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for the area/rohe moana:

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the notice, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This notice is made under the Fisheries (Kaimoana Customary Fishing) Regulations 1998 (the regulations). It comes into force on the day after the date of its notification in the Gazette.

The notice relates to a customary food gathering area/rohe moana of the tangata whenua represented by Ngāti Hine/Ngāti Rāngo (Puatahi Marae), Ngāti Whātua Tūturu/Te Tao Ū (Haranui Marae), Ngāti Rāngo (Kakanui Marae), Te Tao Ū (Reweti Marae), and Ngāti Rāngo (Araparera Marae). The area/rohe moana is for an area on the west coast of Northland from Kakaraea (Karaka Point) on the Kaipara Harbour, southwards to Kirikiri Bay, extending seaward approximately 112 nautical miles on the northern boundary and 170 nautical miles on the southern boundary.

Notice is given of the appointment of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki for the area/rohe moana. The Minister of Fisheries made the appointments at the request of Puatahi Marae, Haranui Marae, Kakanui Marae, Reweti Marae, and Araparera Marae.

The powers of Tāngata Kaitiaki/Tiaki are set out in the regulations.
