This order is made under section 18AB of the Conservation Act 1987

(a)

on the advice and with the consent of the Executive Council; and

(b)

on the recommendation of the Minister of Conservation, made after meeting the requirements of section 18AB(2) of that Act.

Order

1 Title

This order is the Conservation (Nomination of Wairarapa Moana Wetland as Wetland of International Importance) Order 2020.

2 Commencement

This order comes into force on 2 July 2020.

3 Interpretation

In this order, unless the context otherwise requires,—

Act means the Conservation Act 1987

wetland means the wetland specified in clause 4.

4 Wetland and details of area of wetland

(1)

The wetland is the Wairarapa Moana Wetland.

(2)

The wetland is a wetland complex of 10,547 hectares that contains a number of connected freshwater and coastal water bodies. It comprises the full extent of Lake Wairarapa (41°13′S and 175°13′E) and the full extent of Lake Onoke (41°23′S and 175°07′E). The southern limit is the coastal shingle spit and the eastern and northern boundary includes the freshwater wetlands that are within conservation areas adjacent to Lake Wairarapa. The wetland complex also includes several rivers and streams, including the Ruamahanga River, which connects the two lakes.

5 Minister to notify Ramsar Secretariat

The Minister for the time being responsible for the Ramsar Administrative Authority must notify the Ramsar Secretariat of the wetland and the details of the area of the wetland.

6 Official geographic name of wetland

Wairarapa Moana Wetland is the official geographic name of the wetland.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order, which comes into force on 2 July 2020, nominates Wairarapa Moana Wetland as a wetland of international importance, in accordance with the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat, done at Ramsar on 2 February 1971 (the Convention).

This order is made under section 18AB of the Conservation Act 1987, which provides for a declaration that a wetland must be notified to the Ramsar Secretariat for recognition under the Convention.

Date of notification in Gazette: 4 June 2020.

This order is administered by the Department of Conservation.
