This order is made under sections 7, 8, and 9 of the Major Events Management Act 2007—

(a)

on the advice and with the consent of the Executive Council; and

(b)

on the recommendation of the Minister for Economic and Regional Development made in accordance with the requirements of those sections.

Order

1 Title

This order is the Major Events Management (Rugby World Cup 2021) Order Revocation Order 2021.

2 Commencement

This order comes into force on 14 May 2021.

3 Revocation

The Major Events Management (Rugby World Cup 2021) Order 2020 (LI 2020/190) is revoked.

4 Revocation of this order

This order is revoked at the close of 21 May 2021.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order, which comes into force on 14 May 2021, revokes the Major Events Management (Rugby World Cup 2021) Order 2020 (the principal order). The principal order relates to the Rugby World Cup 2021, a rugby tournament that was intended to take place in New Zealand from 18 September 2021 to 16 October 2021.

The principal order does the following things under the Major Events Management Act 2007 (the Act):

  • declares the event to be a major event:

  • identifies the major event organiser for the event:

  • declares the protection period for the event:

  • declares emblems and words to be, for that period, major event emblems and major event words.

The effect of the principal order is to afford the event certain protections under subpart 2 of Part 2 of the Act. The protections restrict, during the protection period for a major event, a person’s ability to make a representation (such as in an advertisement) suggesting that there is an association between the major event and goods and services, a brand of goods and services, or a person who provides those goods and services.

The Rugby World Cup 2021 has now been postponed due to the continued impact of COVID-19. Accordingly, the principal order is no longer required. It is likely that a new order will be made for a 2022 event once details are confirmed.

This order is revoked at the close of 21 May 2021.
