Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

These regulations, which come into force on the day after the date on which they are notified in the Gazette (the commencement date), amend the Land Transport (Motor Vehicle Registration and Licensing) Regulations 2011 (the principal regulations).

In 2020, regulation 14A was inserted into the principal regulations to extend the duration of certain motor vehicle licences for a 6-month period. That period ended on 10 October 2020.

These regulations amend regulation 14A to extend the duration of certain motor vehicle licences during a different period. The categories of licence to be extended are licences that—

  • expired or will expire between 21 July 2021 and the day before the commencement date (inclusive) and that remain expired on the commencement date; and

  • expire in the period between the commencement date and 29 November 2021.

Licences in these 2 categories have effect in the period between the commencement date and 30 November 2021. The offence provisions in regulations 77 and 78 (which relate to operating unregistered or unlicensed motor vehicles and keeping motor vehicles continuously licensed) do not apply while the licences have effect.

Issued under the authority of the Legislation Act 2012.

Date of notification in Gazette: 14 September 2021.

These regulations are administered by the Ministry of Transport.
