Explanatory note

This note is not part of the order, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This order provides for the commencement of the Dog Control (Perro de Presa Canario) Order 2010, which adds a reference to the Perro de Presa Canario breed of dog to Schedule 4 of the Dog Control Act 1996 (the Act). A dog breed specified in Schedule 4 is subject to the following rules and restrictions under the Act:

• no person may import into New Zealand any dog that belongs wholly or predominantly to the breed (subject to certain exceptions set out in section 30A(5) of the Act); and

• a territorial authority must classify any dog in its district that it believes on reasonable grounds to belong wholly or predominantly to the breed as menacing (which has the effects set out in section 33E of the Act).

The Dog Control (Perro de Presa Canario) Order 2010 comes into force 28 days after the notification of this order in the Gazette.
