Pursuant to section 140(1)(ba) of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, His Excellency the Governor-General makes the following regulations, acting—

(a) on the advice and with the consent of the Executive Council; and

(b) on the recommendation of the Minister for the Environment made after consideration of the matters in section 140(2A) of that Act and after complying with the requirements of section 141 of that Act.

1 Title

These regulations are the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Organisms Prescribed as Not New Organisms) Amendment Regulations 2014.

2 Commencement

These regulations come into force on 7 August 2014.

3 Principal regulations

These regulations amend the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Organisms Prescribed as Not New Organisms) Regulations 2009 (the principal regulations).

Replace the Schedule with the Schedule set out in the Schedule of these regulations.

Explanatory note

This note is not part of the regulations, but is intended to indicate their general effect.

These regulations, which come into force on 7 August 2014, amend the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (Organisms Prescribed as Not New Organisms) Regulations 2009.

The regulations add 3 additional organisms to the schedule of organisms that are “not new” organisms for the purpose of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996. The new classification will allow research to be carried out into ways to use the organisms.
