Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2020: revoked, on 1 November 2021 (after expiring on the close of 31 October 2021), by clause 5 of the Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2021 (LI 2021/308).

Pursuant to section 5 of the Governor-General Act 2010, and to the Remuneration Authority Act 1977, the Remuneration Authority makes the following determination (to which is appended an explanatory memorandum).

Determination

1 Title

This determination is the Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2020.

2 Commencement

This determination comes into force on 1 November 2020.

3 Expiry

This determination expires on the close of 31 October 2021.

4 Salary of Governor-General

The salary payable to the Governor-General under section 5(1) of the Governor-General Act 2010 is $371,900 a year.

5 Revocation

The Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2019 (LI 2019/273) is revoked.

Explanatory memorandum

This memorandum is not part of the determination, but is intended to indicate its general effect.

This determination, which comes into force on 1 November 2020, sets the rate for the salary of the Governor-General. The determination is made under the Governor-General Act 2010, which provides for the Governor-General’s salary to be determined from time to time by the Remuneration Authority. The Governor-General’s salary is not exempt from income tax and has been set on this basis.

In making this determination, the Authority took into account the mandatory criteria listed in section 18 of the Remuneration Authority Act 1977 (the Act). In addition, section 18A of the Act required the Authority to take into account prevailing adverse economic conditions. This is an important criterion at this time given the negative impact that the COVID-19 pandemic is having on the New Zealand economy and society. Accordingly, this determination maintains the Governor-General’s salary at the level set in the 2019 determination.

The determination replaces the Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2019, which expires on 31 October 2020.

This determination expires on the close of 31 October 2021.

1 General

This is a consolidation of the Governor-General (Salary) Determination 2020 that incorporates the amendments made to the legislation so that it shows the law as at its stated date.

2 Legal status
