Clause 18

In clause 18, new clause 12A, after subclause (2) (page 8, after line 18), insert:

Any employee in a teaching position who is not a registered teacher may be appointed to an equivalent position for up to 5 years, provided that they are undertaking the process of becoming a registered teacher.

Explanatory note

This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Education Amendment Bill.

The Bill provides for employees of a partnership school kura hourua transitioning to a specified State school to be offered an equivalent position at that specified State school, unless they are not a registered teacher. This amendment seeks to achieve fairness and equity by offering the same terms to non-registered teachers. The expiry date of 5 years provides for these teachers to upskill and undertake a registration process. The amendment would allow non-registered teachers’ special skills and knowledge to be retained by the specified State school and continue to enhance and support the school’s special character.
