Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill
Proposed amendment
Hon Tim Macindoe, in Committee, to move the following amendment:
New clause 7
After clause 6 (page 4, after line 18), insert:
7 Section 71B amended (Obligation to provide copy of party membership rules and candidate selection rules)
After section 71B(1)(c), insert:
(d)
any changes referred to in paragraph (c) that alter rules relating to the expulsion of members of Parliament by the party leader cannot apply in the same term of Parliament in which they were changed.
Explanatory note
This Supplementary Order Paper amends the Electoral (Integrity) Amendment Bill. It inserts new clause 7 to enhance public confidence in the electoral system by preventing parties changing the rules relating to MP expulsion and using them in the same term. This will prevent parties manipulating their rules to enable party leaders to expel outspoken MPs more easily.
